Medical Moulding DFM Checklist

Check your part before you cut steel

A practical two-page checklist to use when designing and developing a new injection moulded component. Work through each point before finalising the design. Anything you can’t tick is worth discussing with your manufacturing partner. Values provided are typical starting points only and should be confirmed against your specific design and manufacturing requirements.

What’s inside

  • 42 tick-box questions across eight areas, from CTQ features and material selection to gating, tolerances, tooling and validation
  • The points that most often cause steel changes, weld lines in the wrong place and tolerances a mould can’t hold
  • A list you can bring to your first meeting with a toolmaker or moulder, whoever you work with

In all my years in this industry, the problems that cost the most time and money were nearly always decided before the tool was ever built. A gate in the wrong place, a tolerance that the material was never going to hold, a weld line sitting on a sealing face. None of that is hard to spot if you know where to look. So we put the questions we’d ask ourselves on paper. Use it on your next part, and if something on it makes you stop and think, give us a call.
